Theology on Tap, Series #19
The Rev'd Patrick Gray
Friday August 6, 2009
If you are a young adult interested in learning about and discussing issues involving Christian faith, in
a casual relaxed atmosphere, then Theology on Tap is for you!
This exciting program, sponsored
by The Church of the Advent
on
Beacon Hill in Boston, will be serving challenging ideas from phenomenal speakers to people in their
twenties and thirties, both singles and couples.
In our next series, we look at “Theology through the Arts” with sessions on
-
September 1st
Theology through the Visual Arts
Ms. Bethany Farrell
How does art speak to the theological tenants of societies? How did
art sneak into the Christian faith? Is “christian art” an oxymoron? In
this lecture we will look at major sea changes in the 2,000 year
relationship of art and theology as well as our inheritance of these
moments today.
Bethany Farrell works for Christians in the Visual Arts and is a
painter and choreographer living in Boston. (And a proud parishioner
of the Church of the Advent.) She attended Boston University where
she studied Art History concentrating in Medieval and Baroque Art.
Prior to her position with CIVA she had worked as the tour manager of
a historic landmark and at the auction house—Skinner, Boston.
Bethany spends the rest of her time getting lost in Boston, running
the church school at the Advent, and on her eternal quest to visit
every house museum she can.
September 8th
Theology through Poetry
Dr. Stephen Teichgraeber
Dr. Teichgraeber will focus his presentation on the Romantic poets,
particularly Tintern Abbey
by William Wordsworth, a meditation on
nature leading to some astonishing mystical experiences allowing him
to conclude that love of nature leads to love of man, a major
stepping stone towards his later Christian belief enunciated in his Immortatity Ode.
He will conclude with a discussion of Lord
Byron's The Vision of Judgment,
a delightful narrative depicting
HOW King George III manages to enter Heaven.
B Mus, Kansas City Conservatory (now Univ. of Missouri), AB, Rockhurst College (Kansas City, MO), MA, Rice University (Houston Texas), PhD, Rice University, Post - Doc, 8 terms, Cambridge University (St Edmund's College) (UK).

Theology through Architecture
Mr. Vance Hosford
Vance will talk about the nature of architecture as a “representative”
art. He will highlight the development of the “narrative” Gothic
tradition in architecture created for the church in Europe and England
and then consider the dilemma of Modernism; what was lost and what
might be the future of architecture for the church.
Vance Hosford got his BA in cinema at UCLA and a Masters in
Architecture at UC Berkeley. He came to Boston and year after college
and was a partner at Payette Associates Architects and Planners in
Boston. He started his own practice in Vermont concentrating on
residential design in 2001. He has a avid interest in ecclesiology and
music. He is a devoted parishioner at the Church of the Advent.
September 22nd

The series will take place Tuesdays (September 1, 8, 15, 22), 7 PM, at M. J. O'Connor's Irish Pub,
